What is responsible for the lack of tolerance in the society?
Like you, I often wonder why people with different beliefs can’t just get along and co-exist peacefully. For centuries there continue to be horror stories of the consequences of racial and religious intolerance. Any intolerance can be reduced down to fear of the unknown and the subsequent rebellion against that which we don’t understand. Consider the eloquent statement of Stevie Wonder. “When we believe in things that we don’t understand then we suffer.” Superstitions aren’t the way.
As a society, we strive to put labels on conditions, issues or those things we know little about. It does nothing to help us understand, but it gives the illusion we know what we’re talking about. So, what’s the basis of racial intolerance? Same as the basis for any other intolerance. We rebel against that which we know nothing or very little rather than get close enough to really understand it. So, we suffer.
However, it is our basic insecurity about our future or resources that make us believe that we would be better without other group (a completely false perception). So lack of tolerance is a phenomenon which was there before and it is still there and I reckon unfortunately will exist in future. The only thing that matters as a society is we are able to react and contain these intolerances to bare minimum.
But there are those that strongly believe that money, mediums of exchange, and the things that they buy are responsible for the increased lack of tolerance in the society. Basically, they claim, earthly resources and all of the above, is at the foundation of the lack of tolerance and that all other suggestions are merely superficial.
The world is ever at war because of the “haves and have nots”. This is the reason that all wars began. As we began to make all things free equally unto all mankind, then all intolerance shall fade away as the flower doeth in the fall.
The FREE DAY MANDATE, FREE DAY REVOLUTION, FREE DAY REVOLUTIONARY MOVEMENT, and the DOCTRINE OF LOVE are all geared to relieve mankind of hatred, intolerance, and to move humanity into the outer reaches of the universe.
There is research evidence that shows the very moment we start identifying or classifying any group, may it be religious, ethnic or other bases; we start perceiving people who are not part of the group as out-group. And the moment we start to see others as part of out-group we start treating them differently. If it happens psychologically we call it prejudice and when it starts reflecting on our actions and behaviour it is discrimination.
There are two possible paths forward. One as referred as characteristics of mature or self actualised personality, we are able to get rid of group identity and consider ourselves individuals propelled by virtues of rationality and empathy. Second, if we are geared towards some super ordinate goal or a goal that binds us all like climate change.
In conclusion, there is no one cause responsible for the increased level of intolerance in the society today. However, one can safely say that those who are intolerant appear to suffer from perceived insecurity.
